Susan Butcher's lead sled dog was named Granite. She was the first woman to win the Iditarod four out of five sequential years. She died on August 5, 2006, after a battle with cancer. The first Saturday of every March is Susan Butcher Day in Alaska.
Libby Riddles was the first woman to win the 1,160 mile Iditarod race in 1985. The next woman to win the Alaskan 16-team dog sled race was Susan Butcher. Her first victory was in the following year in 1986. She went on to win four more times in 1987, 1988, and 1990. In 1989, she came in second. Overall she finished in the top five, 12 times. In 2008, the Alaskan government posthumouslydeclared the first Saturday in March to be "Susan Butcher Day". This coincides with the annual starting day for the Iditarod. The Iditarod received more attention outside of the state after the 1985 victory of Libby Riddles, a long shot who became the first woman to win the race. Susan Butcher became the second woman to win the race and went on to win three more years.
