People enter the Iditarod to win the money. They also enter the race to be in the outdoors and to say that they raced the Iditarod. People enter the Iditarod to win the money. They also enter the race to be in the outdoors and to say that they raced the Iditarod.
Libby Riddles was the first woman to win the 1,160 mile Iditarod race in 1985. The next woman to win the Alaskan 16-team dog sled race was Susan Butcher. Her first victory was in the following year in 1986. She went on to win four more times in 1987, 1988, and 1990. In 1989, she came in second. Overall she finished in the top five, 12 times. In 2008, the Alaskan government posthumouslydeclared the first Saturday in March to be "Susan Butcher Day". This coincides with the annual starting day for the Iditarod.
