About the same as they do right now, except in 1860 skis and poles were wood and the bindings were leather straps. The biggest change is in the bindings, which are made to release when a certain amount of force is exerted against them to keep you safe.

they were sort of browney coloured or some were beige,but they peeled really easily and then went a mingin mucky colour !!!

One of the earliest snowboards was called "The Snurfer". It was basically a plank of wood with a string attached to the nose for control. You can see a photo of it in the link below.
