There are over 340 recognized dog breeds worldwide, ranging from small to large breeds, working dogs to companion dogs, and everything in between. These breeds are categorized into groups such as sporting, hound, working, terrier, toy, non-sporting, herding, and miscellaneous.
Dogs were used in the Iditarod because of their natural ability to travel long distances in harsh winter conditions, their strong sense of smell to navigate through snowstorms, and their loyalty to their human mushers. Their endurance, strength, and teamwork made them well-suited for the grueling race.
Dogs during the Yukon Gold Rush faced harsh conditions such as extreme cold weather, rough terrain, and long hours pulling heavy sleds. They were often overworked, underfed, and lacked proper shelter, leading to fatigue, injuries, and sometimes death. Many dogs were also exposed to diseases and faced competition for food and resources from humans and other animals.
