Figure skating can be both a team sport and an individual one, but is only an indirect competition. In individual, each skater does their own performance and is graded, then compared with all others in the competition. In pairs or group, the skates in each team will conduct a performance, receiving the grade as a team and then has this compared to other teams in the competition.

In the Winter Olympics, there are both individual events and team events in speed skating.

Men's individual events are the 500 meters, 1000 meters, 1500 meters, 5000 meters, and 10000 meters. Women's individual events are the 500 meters, 1000 meters, 1500 meters, 3000 meters, and 5000 meters.

The men's team event is a pursuit of 8 laps where 4 skaters skate 2 laps each. The women's team event is a pursuit of 6 laps where 3 skaters skate 2 laps each.

It can be both. There is synchronized skating or theatre on ice. Those are both team involved categories. And you know that in the Olympics most people are soloists.
