The sport of swimming mainly dates back to prehistoric tmes in its origin. The paintains made in cave walls revela it was active during stone age which can be traced to around 7000 years ago. The documented evidence can be found from 2000 BC with the help of initial reference eing recorded as the Iliad, Beowulf, Gilgamesh, The Bible, The Odyssey and some other sagas. The first swimming book to be published was in 1538 A.D by a German professor The book was called 'Der Schwimmer Oder ein Zwiegespräch über die Schwimmkuns' and translated in English as 'A Dialogue on the Art of Swimming' or 'The Swimmer'. In 1800, Europe was the first to start competitive swimming with breast stroke becoming the most notable form. In 1902, the modern freestyle features such as flutter kick and the overarm strokes were first developed by an English man called Richard Cavill. Later it emerged as a main sport which was included even in the Olympics.

Hope this helps.
