Michael Fred Phelps II (born June 30, 1985) is a retired American swimmer and the most decorated Olympian of all time with 22 medals. Phelps began swimming at the age of seven. He was 15 years old at the time of his first Olympics in 2000 and finished 5th in the 200 m butterfly.
In his first event in 2004, the 400-meter individual medley, Phelps won with a world record time of 4:08.26 to win his first Olympic gold medal for the 2004 Olympics and went on to win 6 Gold Medals and 2 Bronze medals.
At the 2008 Olympics, he won 8 gold medals.
