The first successful skydive took place in France in 1797. It was limited to hot air balloons until the 20th Century ( 1903- Kitty Hawk ).Stayed pretty primitive and extremely rare ( some dare devils and wing walkers made a living during the twenties and thirties) until WWII, where aircrews would survive being shot down by jumping out of the plane or being ejected. Really didn't develop as a sport until the fifties and sixties, though.
