Commonly, the scoring system awards points such as 5 points for 1st place, 3 points for 2nd place, 2 points for 3rd place, and 1 point for 4th place, with no points awarded for 5th place. The total points from all relay events are then summed to determine the overall ranking for the teams in the meet.
