To start a soccer game you begin with a kickoff. The referee will call for a captain from each team to decide which team will get the first kickoff and which team will start on which side of the field. Often this is done by flipping a coin. Whoever wins the coin toss will have the choice of the kickoff or side of the field. The ball will be placed in the center of the field and the team doing the kickoff will have a player or two in the center circle while the other team must stay out side of the circle until the ball is played. The referee will signal the start of the game, the ball will be played, and the game begins.
Each game, half and after each goal scored there is a face off at midfield.
Each team sends one player to "face-off" with each other while the 4 other midfielders (2 from each team) stand on either sides of the width of the field.
The other players (3 attackmen, 3 defensemen, 1 goalie for each team) are confined to the retraining box until one team is awarded possession.
Depending on the type of swimming pool, all the players are touching the side of the pool of their own side or are on the bank of the pool. Each team decides which player will sprint for the ball. This means that when they line up, the fastest person goes to the side of the pool where the official with the ball is. The official then blows his whistle and all the players swim to the middle of the pool. The official throws the ball in the middle of the 2 people sprinting for the ball. Whoever gets it is on offense.

Water polo
In the very early days of water polo they used a leather ball which absorbed water throughout the game therefore by the end of the game it was a lot heavier than at the start and actually 'floated' a foot or so under the surface of the water. This made the game more a test of strength and stamina rather than skill. More recently Indian rubber was used
