In my opinion, yes, Michael Phelps is autistic. All I need do is look at his face to see that. ADHD and ADD are terms people can understandably prefer to use in place of autism because they are milder handicaps and carry less ostracism than does autism. But it is marvelous that Michael found a perseveration that he stayed with to the point of developing his considerable and outstanding talent. This is the positive side of autism. I expect Michael had an exceptionally supportive set of parents who helped give him what he needed to develop the way he did. They, and he, are to be commended for this.
