Florida State University started the tomahawk chop in 1984 in a game against Auburn. Thereafter it became the signature of FSU games. Atlanta "borrowed" the chop when Dieon Sanders came to the plate early in his first year with the Braves. The Kansas City Chiefs have shown no shame and have adopted it as their own in recent years as well. The music for the chop was written by a music professor at FSU and was copy writed some years ago.
Children had to do chores before school -- milking cows; feeding and watering cows, horses, sheep, and pigs. After school, they did similar chores and helped gather eggs, chop wood, and gather corn cobs to heat the cook stove in the kitchen.

A Red PalmYou're in this dream of cotton plants. You raise a hoe, swing, and the first weedsFall with a sigh. You take another step,Chop, and the sigh comes again,Until you yourself are breathing that wayWith each step, a sigh that will follow you into town. That's hours later. The sun is a red blisterComing up in your palm. Your back is strong,Young, not yet the broken chairIn an abandoned school of dry spiders.Dust settles on your forehead, dirtSmiles under each fingernail. You chop, step, and by the end of the first row,You can buy one splendid fish for wifeAnd three sons. Another row, another fish,Until you have enough and move on to milk,Bread, meat. Ten hours and the cupboards creak. You can rest in the back yard under a tree.Your hands twitch on your lap,Not unlike the fish on a pier or the bottomOf a boat. You drink iced tea. The minutes jerkLike flies. It's dusk, now night,And the lights in your home are on.That costs money, yellow lightIn the kitchen. That's thirty steps,You say to your hands,Now shaped into binoculars. You could raise them to your eyes:You were a fool in school, now look at you. You're a giant among cotton plants. Now you see your oldest boy, also running.Papa, he says, it's time to come in.You pull him into your lapAnd ask, What's forty times nine?He knows as well as you, and you smile. The wind makes peace with the trees,The stars strike themselves in the dark. You get up and walk with the sigh of cotton plants. You go to sleep with a red sun on your palm,The sore light you see when you first stir in bed.
The Tomahawk Chop is derived from a gesture popularized by fans of the Florida State Seminoles. Supposedly, Deion Sanders, a Florida State product, taught it to Atlanta Braves fans when he joined the Braves in 1991.
FSU had been doing the chop for a number of years; the Braves adopted it when they signed Deon Sanders as a player. Sanders had been a star football and baseball player at FSU.

As it is well known, the Florida State Seminoles were the creators of the famous Tomahawk Chop. When Deion Sanders became a 2-Sport Athlete (Atlanta Falcons & Atlanta Braves) is when this started for the Braves in the early 1990's. Deion played back at FSU in his college days. During Spring Training playing down in Florida, many old fans would watch him play and begin doing the chop. Because the Atlanta Braves mascot is a type of Indian, it began to become very popular and is today the very image of the Atlanta Braves.
