It depends on the piece. The little ones in the 'front row' are called pawns. The rooks are at each end of the board. Beside the rook, is the Knight, which generally looks like a horse. Beside the knight is the Bishop which looks 'pointy' (as my Chess students call it Mr. Pointyhead) and has a notch in the side. In the middle comes the King and the Queen. The king is generally the taller middle piece.
