It depends on the piece. The little ones in the 'front row' are called pawns. The rooks are at each end of the board. Beside the rook, is the Knight, which generally looks like a horse. Beside the knight is the Bishop which looks 'pointy' (as my Chess students call it Mr. Pointyhead) and has a notch in the side. In the middle comes the King and the Queen. The king is generally the taller middle piece.
In the game of chess there is a chess piece called the Queen.
A fairy chess piece is a chess piece not used in conventional chess, but used in certain chess variants and some chess problems. These pieces vary in movement abilities and possible additional properties.

A ten minute chess game is a blitz game of chess.
There are no coins in the game of chess, but the game with coins played on a chess board is called checkers. The pieces are also called checkers. For the actual game chess, the pieces are called pawns, king, queen, bishops, knights, and rooks. Pawns are the pieces that look like SORRY! (the game) pieces. the king is usually the piece with a cross on top. The queen wears a crown. The bishops are the pawn-like pieces with a longish head and a slit in the side of the head. The knights look like horses. The rook is the piece that looks like a castle.
Chess is derived from "Shah" which is how Persian emperors/kings are called. The belief is that the game was invented in Persia, and it was named after the king, being the most important piece on the board.
A castle is a chess piece that can move any number of squares vertically or horizontally. It is also called a rook.
In the game of chess, a pawn is a 'man' (piece) of the lowest value, therefore if you say someone is just a pawn means his place is not important in the scheme of things. It also implies that he has been manipulated. When Oswald was arrested after President Kennedy was shot in Dallas, he claimed he was just a "patsy" or fall guy; he could have said, "I'm just a pawn."
