AnswerIt's really important to get a professional in to balance off your pool table. You can buy the green felt and do the job yourself and glue it down, then get the pro in to balance off the pool table.

Measure length and width and purchase your green felt. Take a large sheet of brown paper and measure length and width making a template (pattern) and be sure to get the 4 pocket holes done very neatly. Then lay the felt out on the floor where you can cut with a carpet knife (be sure you have a good sharp one) and place the brown paper pattern over-top and start cutting away. Be really carefully of the 4 holes (these are tricky.) Once you have it cut out then roll glue onto the table (after you have taken any old felt off and sanded lightly so the surface is smooth and other glues removed) and carefully lay-out the cut green felt. Isn't as hard as it seems. If you're a guy, trust me ... find someone in the family that is a good seamstress.

Good luck Marcy

AnswerGo to the bank. Withdraw $320. Buy a case of beer and snacks. Call a professional. Drink your beer while watching the professional cover your table. Offer a beer to the professional only after the job is done. Pay the professional the remaining $$$$.

What you will need to be able to do is reach the very edges of your slate (bed of your table). The best way to show the markings required is with a diagram, below is a small version, please click on the image to get a much larger version to print or save as you wish.

There are 4 primary kinds of Swimming Pools. The type you chose is going to be based on where you live and what you want the cover to do.

Automatic Pool Covers

Automatic pool covers are the most expensive option. They are very safe and keep debris out of the water. They can be quite expensive, and can only be installed on rectangular and square pools.

Solar Cover

Solar covers can warm you pool on sunny days and keep a large amount of debris out of the water. They are heavy and kind of ugly.

Pool Safety Nets

Safety nets are good for keeping small kids or dogs out of the pool but will not keep debris out of the water. They also do not help control the temperature of the water.

A pool table cover protects the surface of a pool table from debris, dust, and spills. It is usually made from a reinforced vinyl, so it is waterproof. The table side of the cover is usually of a reinforcing cloth.

There are multiple steps to leveling a pool table. The first step is leveling the table structure, which can be done as the table is put together and should only require minor adjust of each leg. Then, after installing the slate, shims are used underneath the slate to complete the leveling.

An illustration is extremely useful to learn to cover the rails the first time. Covering the rails is the most difficult part of assembling a pool table.

If the feather strips are not in perfect condition, purchase new ones, they're cheap.

If you have pre-cut felt, your job is a lttle easier and you have less chance of wasting felt. First, identify the proper side and back side of the felt. Lay the felt back side up along the rail overlapping the feather strip. Insert the feather strip, starting in the center and work your way to each endbeing sure the cloth stays aligned. Tap the strip in with a small plastic hammer. Trim the ends of the strips.

Pull the felt back over the rail, turn the rail over and begin securing the felt - in the center first - pulling it taut over the rubber. Don't pull too tightly, and the same pressure must be used at all points along the rail. After the center, continue from the center to each end, making sure the cloth stays properly aligned.

Move on the the corners. The corners require a miter and a fold, which needs careful trimming with a razor blade or hobby knife, placing the lower portion of the felt first and then folding the upper down over the lower to form a tight and perfect seam on the corner.

After these are secured, take a good look at each rail as you complete them - any areas where the felt does not look perfectly straight means that it should be re-done. If you are satisfied you have done this all properly, trim all the excess felt and your done.

Yes, because it will keep dirt and dust off the surface, and protect it from accidental spills. A cover is a cheap investment to protect what may be an expensive investment.
