A free hit would be given if one team commits an offense under the rules and it is a disadvantage to the nonoffending team. Offenses might include a dangerous ball, hacking, obstruction of any kind, and raising the ball illegally, as well as the ball contacting a player's foot, body or the back of their stick.
A free hit can be awarded for a number of reasons. Firstly it the ball hits a foot outside the D and is not on purpose. Secondly if the ball is lifted and the umpire deems it as dangerous. If the back of the stick is used. Deliberate pushing or fouling. Finally if the ball is lifted into or in the D by the attacking team. Hope this helps :)
An umpire should point in the direction that the team is going that has been awarded the free hit.
A free hit is never allowed in hockey.

A 16 yard hit is a type of free hit, awarded to the defense, when the ball goes wholly over the backline (but a goal is not awarded) and the attacking team was the last to touch it in any way. It is taken in line with where the ball crossed the backline, up to 14.63 metres from the backline.
The roll-in was replaced by a free hit from the line in the 1970 revision of the rules.
Yes, if that is the severest penalty available. Interfering with another player or their equipment is an offence under the rules.

There is currently no offside rule in field hockey. There were prior offside rules, rules that restricted the positioning of players from the attacking team in a way similar to the offside rule in soccer. The offside rules were changed as the rules of field hockey changed. The evolution of the field hockey offside rule culminated with its abolition in the mid 1990s.
Every sport uses penalties to promote fair play and minimize unfair advantages. When it comes to free hits in field hockey, the umpires use their discretion and interpretation to determine the penalty. Typically, an umpire awards a free hit when a foul like an obstruction occurs outside the striking zone. The umpire may give a free hit to either the offense or defense depending on who creates the foul. More serious penalties like dangerous play or raising field hockey sticks outside the goal require a stricter penalty.
