The soccer ball was made out of leather in the early years of the game because leather is flexible and durable, and of all the materials available at the time, it was the best choice. Leather was used to cover the animal bladders that formed the air sack inside the ball. Synthetic materials were experimented with as chemistry developed, and eventually leather was discontinued as the construction material of choice. The new synthetic materials were flexible, durable and would permit a ball to retain its shape. Most importantly, the new materials absorbed less water than leather, and water adsorption was always a concern with the leather ball. Just as an aside, today's soccer balls are all synthetic because of the superbly uniform performance of the material and the ability to resist moisture. Synthetic's overall performance has surpassed leather's so it's better for ball construction.

An indoor volleyball is usually made out of synthetic leather that is good for hitting even surfaces, like a gym floor. The inside is pumped full with air. An outdoor, professional, or game volleyball is usually made out of real leather that is harder than the synthetic leather. This is also filled with air. Both volleyballs have cut panels of either synthetic leather or real leather that is stitched very tightly so that no air will escape.
Good volleyballs are generally made out of leather or synthetic leather. It does varie a lot though, so if you want to know a specific volleyball, you can go onto their website and descriptions of balls and find it there.
The first volleyball was made from different types of leather. These were smaller than present and quite lighter.

Volleyballs are made of synthetic or genuine leather, which is wrapped around a rubber and butyl material known as the bladder.

Most volleyballs have three levels of construction. The first level is a rubber bladder made from the same material as a bicycle inner tube. The bladder is then attached to a cloth layer made of material similar to cheese cloth and sealed with a rubber type glue. The outer layer is made of leather and is glued to the cloth layer.
A volleyball is typically made of synthetic leather or composite materials. The cover of the volleyball is stitched together to encase the inner bladder that holds the air and gives the ball its shape and bounce.

Here are some differences:Beach volleyball typically has 2 players per side, while standard volleyball has 6 players per side.Standard volleyballs are made of leather and are heavier than beach volleyballs.Indoor courts are larger than outdoor courts. In standard volleyball, a match is 5 sets or games. In beach volleyball, a match is the best of 3 games.
