When the Baseball hits your hand, its energy will be transferred to your hand and arm (and to some extent, the rest of your body and everything its in contact with). This energy will move your hand backwards suddenly. If the joints in your arm are already near their' limits then this transfer of energy may damage the joints. Extending your hand forward prevents this.
