It is actually 60 feet between bases and 40-42 from the mound to the plate (this varies depending on the age group and level of competition). The reason the distance is shorter than the 90 feet in Baseball is because softballs are so much heavier than baseballs so they cannot travel as far when hit or thrown. To make up for this, the entire field is made smaller, including the base paths.
