A safety base is used for what its name implies. To give more safety to the players, a safety base is located in foul territory. The batter must run through this base, leaving the other base for the defensive fielder to make a play on the ball. Usually the bases that the batter has to run through is orange and the base that the fielders use is white. At all other times in the games, besides the initial run to first base, the runner must keep in contact with the white base to remain safe.

An extended first based in softball is known as a double bag as well. It is an orange bag that is in foul territory. A runner that is running straight through first base is entitled to the orange base, leaving the first baseman the white base to make the play. This is just to prevent unnecessary collisions at first base, as a safety precaution. It is an optional addition to fields.
