In the 1950s you needed 8 wins to win the Stanley Cup. In 1955 I believe the Red Wings won 8 straight games (no losses) to win the Stanley Cup. A fan who worked at a fish market saw 8 legs on an octopus symbolizing the 8 wins needed to win the cup. Thus a tradition was born and now it is thrown on the ice for good luck.
This was first done back in the 1950s when it took eight wins in the playoffs to win the Stanley Cup. There was a symbolism between the eight wins and the eight arms of the octopus.

i don't know & i honestly don't care about hockey. Hockey is the worst sport known to Earth.
There are three periods in a game of ice hockey.
Hockey not Ice-Hockey
The Game of Ice hockey is played with a Puck.

In ice hockey, three goals by one player in one game is called a 'Hat Trick'. Because of that name, people throw hats on the ice when a player performs a Hat Trick. Hat Tricks are rare, however, and people do not get their hats back after the game.
well there is ice hockey and there is curling which is more like shuffleboard on ice
Ice Hockey is faster.
No throwing your stick will result in a penalty.
mostly tradition or over excitement, just like Swedish Fans Throw Dildos, a tradition to throw fish on the ice when Cornell hockey faces off against Harvard at home, The Hat Trick where fans throw hats on the ice if someone scores three times in one quarter and Detroit fans throw octopus
