The Bears were formed in 1920 in Decatur, Illinois as a football club for A.E. Staley's starch manufacturing company. They spent the 1920 season as the Decatur Staley's but moved to Chicago in 1921 to capture a larger fan base and played as the Chicago Staleys. In 1922 Staley sold the team to George Halas and Dutch Sternaman and Halas renamed them the Chicago Bears.

In the early years of pro football in the US, teams sometimes used a name similar to that of the established Major League baseball team in that city. Chicago had the Cubs in baseball and "Bears" is like "Cubs" only a bear would be a tougher sounding name for a football team. The NY Giants derived their name from the baseball Giants and both teams shared the old Polo Grounds as a home park. The current Washington Redskins began in Boston as the Braves and played at Braves field where the Baseball Boston Braves were located. When they moved to Fenway Park they wanted to keep the Indian identification, plus their head coach was a Native American, so instead of "Red Sox" they became "Redskins". The current Indianapolis Colts, in one of their several locations, were once called the New York Yanks and played at Yankee Stadium. The Detroit Lions derived their name from the baseball "Tigers". Other, now defunct teams also followed this practice.
