I believe it's from the expression of "dropping a dime", meaning to call someone up-- since years ago pay phones cost only a dime to use. Sports analyst hunt for obscure and catchy slangs to use. I remember in my high school days, we all went around saying: "Way down town...... BANG!" b/c of Sports Center. I've only heard assists called dimes on Sports Center, so I'm guessing someone got funny w/ the phase.
