Rayne Dakota "Dak" Prescott is the starting quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys. The Louisiana native and Mississippi State product was selected in the fourth round of the 2016 NFL college draft. He was named the National Football League's AP 2016 Offensive Rookie of the Year at the annual NFL Honors awards show on February 4, 2017.
Although he was expected to spend his rookie season as the team's third-string signal caller, he was elevated to the No. 2 spot after backup Kellen Moore was injured. On August 13, 2016, Prescott started the Cowboys' preseason opener against the Los Angeles Rams and impressed many with his poise and command of the offensive.
Twelve days later, Prescott was pressed into duty full time when starting quarterback Tony Romo sustained a back injury in a preseason game at Seattle. In Romo's absence he went on to lead the Cowboys to a 13-and-3 record -- and a team-record 11 consecutive wins in the regular season. He is tied with Ben Roethlisberger of the Pittsburgh Steelers for the most wins by a rookie quarterback in a season.
During his rookie season, Prescott completed 311 of 459 passes for 3,667 yards with 23 touchdown passes. He threw only four interceptions. He also was a threat to run with 57 rushes for 282 yards. His six rushing touchdowns were the most by a Cowboys quarterback in team history. He has thrown only four interceptions.
When Dallas clinched a playoff berth on Sunday, December 4, 2016, Prescott became the first rookie quarterback to guide the Cowboys to the postseason. He also became the first quarterack in the Super Bowl era to win seven of his first eight games.
On Sunday, December 18, 2016, Prescott completed 32 of 36 pass attempts for 279 yards in a 26-20 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Prescott's 88.9 pass completion percentage in the game was the second highest by a quarterback in a contest of at least 30 pass attempts. In 2002, Oakland Raiders QB Rich Gannon completed 89.5% of his passes against the Denver Broncos.
Prescott finished the 2016 regular season with a 104.9 passer rating, the highest mark by a rookie quarterback in NFL history.
On January 15, 2017, In his first career postseason game, Prescptt threw for 302 yards and three touchdowns in a divisional playoff loss to the Green Bay Packers, 34-31.
