I'm not sure if it is still in use there, but I think most places have dropped the "hind" and now simply use the term "catcher." I am not sure of the origin of this term other than the fact that the catcher played behind or "hind" the home plate. I have seen one suggestion that the word "behind" was used to describe the position much in the same way you would say "in the field" to describe outfielders.
