Patrick J. Donovan, also known as Patsy Donovan, a standout Baseball player manager and scout, is generally credited with discovering Babe Ruth in Baltimore. Donovan who was a native of Ireland, was known as a very keen judge of baseball talent. So impressed with young Ruth's pitching and hitting abilities, he immediately urged the Red Sox hierarchy to allow him to sign Ruth on the spot. The rest is history.

PS: Patsy Donovan himself made many more interesting contributions to Major League Baseball in a career that spanned more then 50 years. In spite of a lifetime batting average of 313, and a total number of some 520 stolen bases, this humble and widely respected baseball star, has never been elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame.
