When Mays did play in the Major Leagues, Willie played for the New York Giants from 1951 thru 1957, moved with the team to San Francisco and played for the Giants from 1958 thru part of 1972 and then was traded to the New York Mets on May 11, 1972 and played with the Mets in 1973 as well. Mays also played for the "Birmingham Black Barons" of the Negro Leagues in 1948-9 prior to having his contract bought by the Giants in 1950 after he graduated high school.
