In the town of Birr, on the 1st of April 1888, the final for the 1887 championship was played. Thurles, representing Tipperary, beat Meelick representing Galway. At that time it wasn't unusual for the championship of one year to be completed in another, which is why the 1887 final was played in 1888. At that time too, clubs represented counties, rather than having actual county teams.
The reigning All-Ireland Senior Hurling Champions are Kilkenny, having won the final in September 2011. The Hurling final is normally played on the first Sunday in September.

There are many finals that the GAA organise throughout the year. The two main ones are the All-Ireland Hurling Final, which is played on the first Sunday of September and the All-Ireland Hurling Final which is played on the third Sunday of September.
