William thomas played 10 years in the NFL for the Eagles and made 2 pro bowls at linebacker. He played football in amarillo texas at Palo Duro High school. Led the Dons to an undefeated record in 1986, he was a quarterback and linebacker in high school, making the ALL state team as well. He continued his football career at Texas A&M in college station. He was an out standing line backer at A&M, making the all conference team. Ziggy hood (evander hood) is another former palo duro don from amarillo to make it to the NFL. Ziggy was a defensive end and tight end in high school, he earned all state honors and was selected as the most valuable player of the year for district 3-4A. Ziggy graduated in 2005 from Palo Duro. He went on the play football at Missouri and was drafted in the first round in 2009 by the pittsburg steelers. He has started the past couple years and is entering his fifth season with the steelers. Tae evans and Julius crosslin are two more former palo duro dons to make it to the NFL as well. Tae Evans graduated from Palo Duro in 2006 earning first team all district honors and all state honorable mentioned, then went on to play at West Texas A&M. He was an all american cornerback for WT and signed a free agent contract with the Arizona Cardinals, then later with the St. Louis rams. Julius crosslin graduated from palo duro high school in 2002 where he played running back and linebacker. He was an all state selection along with first team on both sides on the ball in district 3-4A All district team. Julius went on to play at Oklahoma state then signed a free agent contract with the dallas cowboys. He spent a few seasons on their practice squad playing full back. From 2001-2005 Palo Duro produced 3 NFL players, something no other Amarillo high school has ever done or will ever do again. Ron Shanklin is another amarillo native to make it to the NFL. He was a wide reciever for the all african american highschool formally known as Carver High School. He played there in the late 1960's. Ron then played football at The university of North Texas, Shanklin was twice named All-Missouri Valley Conference and was inducted into the North Texas Athletic Hall of Fame in 1986. He played pro football for six seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Amarillo high school produced one NFL player in a punter named Carl Birdsong. Birdsong graduated from Amarillo High School and then from Southwestern Oklahoma State University. Birdsong made the Pro Bowl in 1983-but for an elite punter his professional career was short. By 1986, Birdsong was out of the NFL. Tascosa high school in amarillo produced two NFL players. James Mayberry and Billy Hobbs. James was a running back in the 1970's later playing with the Atlanta falcons from 1979-1981only playing 3 seasons . Billy Hobbs was a line backer in the 1960's who later played played for four seasons in the National Football League for the Philadelphia Eagles and New Orleans Saints and one season in the World Football League for the San Antonio Wings. He was drafted by the Eagles in the eighth round of the 1969 NFL Draft. He played college football at Texas A&M. All of these players are native to amarillo texas and went to high school in one of the four AISD high schools.
