The 2011 Cricket World Cup is being held between three South Asian countries - India, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh. The competition marks the first time Bangladesh have hosted a Cricket World Cup. India's games had previously been scheduled to be held in Pakistan, but after the infamous 2009 attack on the Sri Lankan cricket team in Lahore, the ICC (International Cricket Council) stripped Pakistan of the rights to host the Cricket World Cup.
Ten teams qualify automatically for the World Cup by ICC regulations, those being the Test and One Day International teams of Australia, Bangladesh, England, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka, West Indies, and Zimbabwe.
Beyond this, there was one further tournament to determine which other four teams were to play in the 2011 World Cup, held between April 1 and April 19, 2009. From Group A, the first round qualifiers, in table order, were Ireland, Canada, Scotland, and Namibia, and from Group B, Kenya, Netherlands, United Arab Emirates, and Afghanistan. There was one further competition to whittle down the eight first round qualifiers to the final four teams to enter the World Cup, and in table order, the four qualifiers from this group were Ireland, Canada, Kenya and the Netherlands. This rounded out the qualification tournament for the World Cup.
The first game in the tournament, India v. Bangladesh, takes place on February 19, 2011, at the Sher-e-Bangla Cricket Stadium, Dhaka.
