"Lord Stanley" is sometimes used as a nickname for the Stanley Cup. However, Lord Stanley was Frederick Arthur Stanley, Lord Stanley of Preston. He was appointed governor general of Canada in 1888 and served in that capacity until 1893. While in Canada his son became a hockey player and Lord Stanley grew fond of the game. He is best remembered for donating the Stanley Cup as a trophy for Canada's hockey champions and now is synonomous with the NHL champions. I suggest you Google the Stanley Cup and Lord Stanley for complete information.
The Stanley Cup was originally donated in 1893 as a challenge cup, for the amateur hockey championship of Canada, by Frederick Arthur, Lord Stanley of Preston, at the time Governor General of Canada.
In about a month or month and a half. It depends on how long the teams right now play for.
The Stanley Cup received it's birth in 1892 by Lord Stanley of Preston. The trophy was originally called the Dominion Hockey Challenge Cup and award to Canada's top ranked amateur team. In 1947, the cup became the ultimate prize in the NHL.
Marian Hossa (now of the Chicago Blackhawks), played in the 2008 Stanley Cup Finals for Pittsburgh (and lost), played in the 2009 Stanley Cup Finals for Detroit (and lost), and played in the 2010 Stanley Cup Finals for Chicago (and won).
the BOSTON BRUINS, beause they won the Stanley cup.
Right now, Calgary, they were so good, but then hit a slump at the end to barely miss the playoffs (09-10 season)
yes there once was. they used to to distrbute champagne/beer out of the cup however it is now missing.
this used to be possible, but now the Stanley Cup Finals are between an eastern conference team and a western conference team
The Flyers are on the right track to win the cup now, or in the VERY near future. They will end up beating a perennial favorite (ie Colorado, Detroit,...etc), and joining New Jersey as a serious threat from the east.
As far as I can tell no Newfoundland native has ever been on a team that has won the Cup. Daniel Cleary who plays with Detroit has a good chance this year as the Red Wings are the best team in the League right now. UPDATE: Good prediction! Dan Cleary, born in Carbonear, Newfoundland, did indeed become the first Newfoundlander to win the Stanley Cup with the Red Wings in 2008
Its 2009 and the sharks are off to a good start. Now after about 60 games they look like they could win the Stanley cup without them. GO SHARKS!!!!!!!!!!!
