The Stanley Cup received it's birth in 1892 by Lord Stanley of Preston. The trophy was originally called the Dominion Hockey Challenge Cup and award to Canada's top ranked amateur team. In 1947, the cup became the ultimate prize in the NHL.
Depending on how you look at it, the cup has been around for as much as 116 years. The cup was first purchased as an amateur award in 1893, and given as a professional award in 1917. The original cup was the "punch bowl" shape seen currently on top of the Stanley Cup. The deteriorating cup from 1893 was retired in 1969 and replaced with a replica that now sits atop what we call the Stanley Cup.
