Curling stones are shaped and polished from a chunk of granite. The granite is one of two very specific varieties, mined from either Ailsa Craig (an island off the coast of Scotland) or Trefor quarry in Wales. There are two manufacturers of curling stones. Kays of Scotland, which uses Ailsa Craig granite, and Canadian Curling Stone Co., which uses Trefor quarry granite.
