The kick off is at half way on the 50 metre mark right at centre field as a place kick by the kicker of the team which has traditionally lost the toss, with the winning Captain choosing direction of play. The team kicking off stand at the five metre mark in their own territory and move up in a line as their kicker kicks off at the whistle, signifying the beginning of play. However, the fullback and two wingers for both teams will stay back in their own 20 - between the goal line and the 20 metre mark. At kick off, the ball must travel past the 40 metre mark in the opposing territory to be legal (ie travel 10 metres), and can be a grubber, an "up and under" or a long kick. The team receiving the ball are obliged to stand back 10 metres on the 40 metre line in their own territory but many stand back 15 metres waiting for the whistle and then move forward. When a player is tackled, that player and the tackler each have a dummy half who stand behind them. The attacking team without the ball must retire 5 metres and the defending team without the ball must retire 10 metres or their goal line whichever is the closest. Kick off occurs again following each try, with the team scored against kicking off. Following Half Time, play is recommenced with a kick off by the opposite team to the one which kicked off at the start.
