Rugby League was established in Huddersfield, Yorkshire in August 1895.
The game came about following a long and acrimonious dispute about entitlement to pay for players ( mostly working class players) for lost wages whilst away from work.
The failure of the rugby establishment to even discuss the matter led to the split and the formation of the Northern Rugby Union, which then became known as the Rugby League.
