Its attributed to William Web Ellis a student of Rugby School, Warwickshire England who in 1823 whilst playing football picked up the, which a the time was allowed in the game of football and instead of retiring back toward his team he ran forward (strictly against the ten rules) toward the opposing teams goal line.
