Its attributed to William Web Ellis a student of Rugby School, Warwickshire England who in 1823 whilst playing football picked up the, which a the time was allowed in the game of football and instead of retiring back toward his team he ran forward (strictly against the ten rules) toward the opposing teams goal line. This new tactic caught on and was spread by Rugby students to colleges they then attended. From here it went global. In 1845 the RFu was formed and the formailsation of rules where created. This formed the basis for what we have today

rugby started just as rugby there was no rugby union or rugby league it was just rugby. the stiry goes that some people where playing football(soccer) in Bath and for some reason, one guy picked up the ball and ran through everyone and put the ball down over the line and later said he learned how to do that in Ireland.
