The first rules of the game were not actually a set rule system The game was a mixture of soccer and what we see as Rugby now

The main rules were to kick the ball forward, passing whilst carrying was only allowed when retreating toward your own team, hack was allowed which was actually kicking the legs from beneath the ball carrier/player a scrum was actually more like a maul rucking was when a player fell holding the ball and everyone dived in to get it. the line out was not actually as we see as three were no real side lines. - The game rules came in 1872 when the RFU was finally formed and laws were created in London (UK) to make the game different to that of soccer

Rugby like sports can be traced back to Ancient Greece and Middle Age England. However, the codification and rules of rugby were invented, after a young man at Rugby School broke the rules on the school's form of football. Did American football originate from Rugby Union?

Gridiron (American football) bases alot of it principles on rugby. one cannot however say union as there alot of similarities with rugby league. the similarities are somewhat due to Americas independence and wanting to be different. when people emigrated to America they brought with them rugby however along the way some of the rules were forgotten and so new ones made up. a vague answer but a difficult question Yes Gridiron did originate from Rugby Union.
