Auburn does not play on January 1. If you want to watch some good football that day, watch Alabama Crimson Tide.
While Auburn finished the 1957 season with a record of 10-0, they did not play a bowl game as the school was on probation. After the December 31, 1955 Gator Bowl, won by Vanderbilt over Auburn by the score of 25-13, Auburn did not play another bowl game until the January 1, 1964 Orange Bowl, won by Nebraska 13-7.

Auburn played in the 1984 Sugar Bowl not in the 1983 one. The Penn State Nittany Lions beat my favorite team the Georgia Bulldogs 27 - 23 in the 1983 sugar Bowl. The answer to your question about the Auburn kicker is Al Del Greco who made kicks of 31, 32 and 19 yards to seal the win for Auburn. At the time the game was played Auburn was ranked 3rd while Michigan was ranked 8th. The teams were coached by Pat Dye (Auburn @ 10 - 1) and Bo Schembechler (Michigan @ 9 - 2) and Bo Jackson was the games MVP. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1984_Sugar_Bowl
Through the 2009 season, they have met twice with Auburn leading the series 1-0-1. In 1917, they played a 0-0 tie in Montgomery and in 1990 Auburn won 31-14 in the Hall of Fame Bowl.
In the game played on Jan. 1, 1998, the North Carolina Tar Heels beat the Virginia Tech Hokies, 42-3. In the game played on Jan. 1, 1999 (ending the 1998 season), Georgia Tech beat Notre Dame, 35-28.

From their 3 to 2 loss to TCU in the Sugar Bowl of Jan. 1, 1936, to their 30 to 25 loss to Iowa in the Capital One Bowl of Jan. 1, 2005, they stand at 17 wins, 18 losses, and 1 tie. I dont know what they did in 06 and 07.
This is a bit confusing so bare with me. The 1994 Fiesta Bowl was actually played on Jan 2, 1995. and the 1993 Fiesta Bowl was played on Jan 1, 1994. So here are the results of each game: 1994 Fiesta BowlColorado 41 - Notre Dame 24Jan. 2, 19951993 Fiesta BowlArizona 29 - Miami 0Jan. 1, 1994
