The National Football League & the American Football League did not officially name its World Championship Game the Super Bowl until January 1969 to decide the 1968 world champion. That was Super Bowl III, where the New York Jets shocked the world & defeated the Baltimore Colts, 16-7

The first Super Bowl game played in 1967 was known as the 'AFL-NFL World Championship Game.' Lamar Hunt, founder of the American Football League and owner of the Kansas City Chiefs from 1960 until his death in 2006, first suggested the name 'Super Bowl' based on the 'Super Ball' toy his children had been playing with. He initially suggested it as a temporary name until a better name could be determined. It wasn't until Super Bowl III in 1969 when the championship game became officially known as the Super Bowl.

The rivalry between the NFL and the AFL grew during the 60's to the point that both leagues needed to crown a real football champion as the AFL said that they were as good as the NFL. The NFL at first brushed it off but public clamoring(along with rumors) made them change their mind and show the upstart new league(the AFL) that the NFL was a superior league. This lead to the first "Super Bowl", mainly to determine bragging rights. the NFL won the first two Superbowls but after the NY Jets of the AFL won the third it showed the world that parity had come to pro football. To stop the competition for players between the two leagues a merger was stuck by the leagues. It put a lid on spiraling player contracts for a while. That was one of the basics that prompted the merger. A player would be drafted by an NFL team while also being drafted by an AFL team. He would then entertain offers from both teams, and more often than not, sign with the team who offered more money. As previously stated, the merger ended that altogether.

The original Super Bowl was played on the first Sunday that all the beer-bellied rednecks in the US were found to have:

1. an ample supply of beer,

2. exclusive control of the family TV,

3. and a backyard to pee in -

All at the same time.
