The last player to wear No. 8 for the Dallas Cowboys was quarterback Troy Aikman, who wore that number from 1989 to 2000. Although the Cowboys do not retire uniform numbers, it is unlikely that anyone else will wear the number anytime soon.
Your probably thinking of Steve Pelluer, who was the last Cowboys QB under coach Tom Landry before Jerry Jones and Jimmy Johnson took over in 1989. -- Dallas Cowboy Books Blog http://www.facebook.com/DallasCowboyBooksBlog
On Aug. 31, 1997, the Cowboys defeated the Steelers 37-7 at Pittsburgh's Three Rivers Stadium as Troy Aikman threw four touchdown passes. It was the season opener for both teams.
Troy Aikman was never benched for performance reasons as a rookie quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys in 1989. He started the Cowboys' first three games of the season, but was sidelined by a broken left index finger against the New York Giants in Game 4. He was replaced in the game and for the next month by another rookie quarterback, Steve Walsh. Aikman returned for the last seven games of the season, giving him an 0-11 record as a starter during Dallas' woeful 1-and-15 season. Walsh was at the helm for the team's only win, a 13 to 3 victory over the Washington Redskins.
Many people have played their entire careers with the Cowboys, among them Bob Lilly, Roger Staubach, Don Meredith, Troy Aikman, Drew Pearson and Michael Irvin. But Emmitt Smith, who played his last two NFL seasons with the Arizona Cardinals, signed a one-day contract with Dallas in 1995, so that he could officially retire as a Cowboy.
On January 17, 1971, veteran Craig Morton started for the Dallas Cowboys against the Baltimore Colts in Super Bowl V at Miami's Orange Bowl Stadium. Morton was selected over quarterback Roger Staubach, who had alternated with Morton in several games during the 1970 regular season. In the fourth quarter, Morton threw two key interceptions that enabled the Colts to pull off a 16-13 victory.
The last time the Dallas Cowboys lost two Thanksgiving Week games was during the 2001 season, the year after quarterback Troy Aikman's retirement from pro football. Both contests were played at Texas Stadium. On November 18, Dallas was defeated by the Philadelphia Eagles, 36-3. Four days later, on November 22, the Cowboys -- with Ryan Leaf at quarterback -- lost a squeaker to the Denver Broncos, 26-24.The Cowboys also lost both Thanksgiving Week games the year before.
It would have to be Troy Aikman
Aikman's last Super Bowl win was Super Bowl XXX, on January 28, 1996, held at Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe, Arizona. The Cowboys defeated the Steelers 27-17.
I read they contributed the hit to linebacker LaVar Arrington, it was Aikman's 10th concussion and the last play of his career.
Although the Landry regime intended to select Aikman with the No. 1 pick in 1989, the team was bought by oil and gas businessman Jerry Jones about two months before the draft. So Aikman was the first quarterback of the Jerry Jones/Jimmy Johnson era.
On January 28, 1996, the Dallas Cowboys defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers 27 to 17 in Super Bowl XXX in Tempe, AZ. It also was the last Super Bowl appearance by the Cowboys.
