Chelsea FC have won the UEFA Champions League once on May 19, 2012, although they have had better chances to win it. They were a penalty away from winning the cup in 2008, but John Terry had slipped in his run-up to the ball, and their chance to grab the trophy that night was gone. They had another chance the following year, as they looked as if they had defeated Barcelona in the semi finals, but a series of penalty claims being turned down, and a last minute goal by Andres Iniesta meant that Barcelona went on to the finals on away goals. Chelsea were well on their way out of the competition in numerous occasions, but they have defeated the odds in the 2011/12 season.

Their last 16 draw against Napoli had a bad start, as they suffered an away first-leg defeat. In the second leg, theyfoughtback into the competition with a 4-1 score after extra time. They went through with a 4-3 aggregate score.

Their quarter final draw against Benfica was also a close encounter, as they went into the second leg with a 1-0 aggregate lead. Benfica worked hard for a comeback, but a late goal by Raul Meireles had undone their efforts. Chelsea went through to the semi-finals with a 3-1 aggregate victory.

Chelsea went into the semi finals as underdogs, as the reigning champions at the time aimed to win the champions league in a second successive season. Chelsea defended well in the first leg, and a goal by Didier Drogba meant they had a 1-0 aggregate lead against the favourites going into the second leg. Two early goals by Sergio Busquets and Andres Iniesta, and a red card to John Terry left Chelsea's chances to progress hanging by a thread. Right before halftime, Frank Lampard spotted a run by Ramires, who made no mistake as he chipped his shot over the goalkeeper, and into the net. Chelsea were now leading by away goals, but a goal by Barcelona could have turned it all around. In the last few minutes of the match, a clearance by Ashley Cole found Fernando Torres in acres of space, who punished Barcelona for pushing forward into the opposing half, with a goal that sealed the victory for Chelsea.

Chelsea were even more unlikely to win in the final, as Bayern Munich became the first club to reach a Champions League Final that was hosted by their own home stadium. Bayern Munich enjoyed most of the possession, but the score was level until the very end of the match. A headed goal by Thomas Muller put Bayern Munich into the lead with just a few minutes left of the match. A late corner won by Torres was the last chance for Chelsea to equalize. Didier Drogba became the hero of the night, as his headed effort flew into the top-right corner of the goal, which sent the match into extra time. A penalty was award to Bayern Munich, but Arjen Robben's effort from the spot was saved by Petr Cech. Both sides were goalless during extra time, which meant the match was to be decided on penalties. Bastian Schweinsteiger's shot was deflected to strike the woodwork, which meant Chelsea would win the competition if they scored the next penalty. Didier Drogba stepped up to the spot, and made no mistake, as he put the perfect end to his Chelsea FC career.
