The Chicago Bears have not had a Cheerleading team since the Super Bowl winning 1985 season. Prior to this, their cheerleading squad was known as the "Honey Bears."
Honey Bears
The nickname of the Chicago Bears is "Da Bears."
No. They were called the Honey Bears.
Virginia McCaskey, against popular opinion, fired the Honeybears in 1986.
In college it was Silly Willie. In the Bears' locker room it was "Pinky."
No, the Detroit Lions do not have cheerleaders. Mr. Ford does not like the idea of cheerleaders. He prefers to keep the game a family event atmosphere and thinks that cheerleaders would lead to drunken-male atmosphere that will create a lot of fights and destroy his reputation. Back in the early to mid 1970's while the Lions played in Detroit (Briggs Stadium), they did in fact have cheerleaders - 7 ladies to be exact. We were paid per game and cheered at the home games only, as they did not allow us to travel to the away games. When the Lions moved out of Detroit to the Pontiac, MI Silverdome, the squad was disbanded. There was a time the Detroit Lions did have professional cheerleaders!
The Chicago Bears have resided in the same city and borne the same nickname for the longest period of time in the NFL. The team was established in 1920 as the Decatur Staleys and moved to Chicago the following year, where they became the Bears. They have been known as the Chicago Bears for over a century, making it the longest continuous use of both city and nickname in the league.
"Magic" and "Super Crunch"
All NFL teams have cheerleaders except for the Chicago Bears, Detroit Lions and the Green Bay Packers.
