The longest tennis match in history started Tuesday, June 22 and ended Thursday, June 24 at Wimbledon in 2010. John Isner of the USA beat Nicolas Mahut of France, 70-68, after a record-breaking 11-hour, 5-minute match. The match had to be postponed two nights when the sun went down and the players were still tied.

The previous record for the longest match in tennis history was 6 hours 33 minutes, at the French Open in 2004.

Isner and Mahut smash Existing RecordsOn Thursday, 24th June 2010, John Isner (USA) beat Nicolas Mahut (France) on Court 18 at Wimbledon in the 1st Round. The score was 6-4, 3-6, 6-7 (7-9), 7-6 (7-3), 70-68. The match lasted 11 hours, 5 minutes, spread over three days, with the 5th set suspended Wednesday evening at 59 games all.

It was by far the longest match in grand slam history; the previous record was set at Roland Garros.

It was also officially the longest ever match at Wimbledon, beating the previous record of 6 hours, 9 minutes set by Mark Knowles and Daniel Nestor in their 5-7, 6-3, 6-7 (5), 6-3, 23-21 victory over Simon Aspelin and Todd Perry in 2006.

In addition, it was the grand slam match with by far the highest ever number of games, 183; the previous record had stood since the 1st Round of Wimbledon 1969 when Pancho Gonzalez beat Charlie Pasarell 22-24, 1-6, 16-14, 6-3, 11-9, 112 games. This was 26 fewer games than in today's 5th set alone!

The longest match at Roland Garros was when Fabrice Santoro beat fellow Frenchman Arnaud Clement in the 1st Round of the 2004 French Open. The 6-4, 6-3, 6-7, 3-6, 16-14 battle took 6 hours 33 minutes.

The longest recorded match at the Australian Open was the 5:11 it took Boris Becker to beat Omar Camporese in 1991 until very recently it was broken when Rafael Nadal took 3 minutes longer to beat fellow countryman Fernando Verdasco 6-7 6-4 7-6 6-7 6-4 in a pulsating semifinal match that lasted five hours and 14 minutes.

The longest match at the Davis Cup was between Mats Wilander and John McEnroe. The match lasted 6 hours 22 minutes - 1982 Davis cup semifinals.

The longest tennis match was played by Nicholas Mahut and John Isner. The match lasted over 3 days of playing as the lack of sunlight forced them to continue the match on another day. The last set alone was 68-70 with Isner winning.
