There was no first NBA team. The NBA started with 11 teams in 1946 as the Basketball Association of America. The first game was on November 1 between the New York Knicks and the Toronto Huskies (the Knicks won 68-66). The league's other teams were the Washington Capitols, Philadelphia Warriors, Providence Steamrollers, Boston Celtics, Chicago Stags, St. Louis Bombers, Cleveland Rebels, Detroit Eagles , and Pittsburgh WarMachines .

The league changed its name to the National Basketball Association in 1949 upon merging with the National Basketball League.

In the NBA's first season, in 1946-47 while it was called the BAA (three years before it changed its name to the NBA), there were 11 teams in the league. Their names were:

Eastern Conference

  • Washington Capitols
  • Philadelphia Warriors
  • New York Knickerbockers
  • Providence Steam Rollers
  • Toronto Huskies
  • Boston Celtics
Western Conference
  • Chicago Stags
  • St. Louis Bombers
