Rugby

It was Rugby Football better known as Rugby. It was originated in 1823 when the pupils were playing the then game football. In this early version of the game we now call soccer as well players could hack the legs from the ball player and at that time the players could pick up the ball - However, it was the rule of the day that the ball carrier ran back toward his team to make a pass. William Web Ellis a student of the school collected the ball and ran forward toward the oppositions goal. This concept caught on and the school played on with this rule. The game spread as pupils left and went to university, the armed forces etc and the concept of carrying the ball continued with passes being make behind the carrier as we have today. Then in 1863 the Football association was Born and they decided hacking and ball carrying were to be outlawed. There were a number of teams that were playing the original style who decide to breakaway and allow the ball carrying. By 1870 a group of clubs and universities came together to formalise the rules and set up the RFU (Rugby Football Union) The name remains today and the beautiful game goes from strength to strength.

How did the game rugby come about?

In the 1800's, the seven major "public" (for Americans these are actually private) schools of England started to formalize the rules of "football". While six of the seven schools played a very similar game involving kicking and chasing the ball, Rugby school in Warwickshire played a very different game. Association football (Assoc football- hence soccer) developed as those six schools refined the rules. How Rugby's game developed differently is not really known. In Rugby Union myth, a young player by the name of William Webb Ellis at Rugby school in 1823 started the unique aspects of rugby football by, as the stone monument at Rugby School states: "This stone commemorates the exploit of William Webb Ellis who with a fine disregard for the rules of football, as played in his time, first took the ball in his arms and ran with it, thus originating the distinctive features of the rugby game, a.d. 1823" Like many good legends, it is false. The reality is that handling the ball was generally permitted in all variations of football in the early 1800s. This existed up to the formation of the Football Association in 1860. There was even consideration to allow ball handling in Association football. Ultimately it was forbidden. Back to Rugby School's style of football: By the 1830's running with the ball was the norm, the H shape goal post (two vertical posts and a cross bar) was being used, and the concepts of the scrum and line out were introduced. The basic modes of scoring were in place. With the introduction of the crossbar also came a change in the rules of rugby that said a goal could only be scored by the ball passing over the bar from a place kick or drop kick. A "try at goal" was awarded when a player placed the ball down on the ground behind the opponent's goal. This is where the where the Gridiron football term "touch down" for a score came from. The "after try" conversion was based on where the ball was touched down in the try zone. To keep the teams apart and prevent the ball from being passed forward, the "off your side" rule was introduced. The official rules (the laws) were initially agreed on and documented in 1862. Many former Rugby students and clubs wanted to play rugby and have a formal competition structure outside of the Rugby School. In 1871, the Rugby Football Union was formed with 21 clubs. This is the official start of what is now known as Rugby Union Football. Two other forms of Football developed form Rugby Union. In the mining communities of Wales and northern England a variation known as Rugby League started. Significant in this was that it was played by the working classes and professionalism was allowed. In the United States, Rugby Union evolved into what is now known as Gridiron, or American, Football. I hope this is what you wanted. Thank you,

Why is Americans style football often called the gridiron sport?

After playing Football for many years Americas top coaches became frustrated that their top athletes were unable to make any impact on football. They decided that as football was too complex for their best athletes they would invent a more basic "cheap and easy" sport for them to play. Gridiron was invented.Because it evolved from Rugby, which in turn evolved from soccer -- or what most of the world calls "football." Rugby is really "rugby football," just as soccer is really "association football." American/gridiron football is just another football code, and its name reflects its origins. Over time, most people started calling "rugby football" simply "rugby," while Americans started referring to their game simply as "football" instead of "gridiron football" or "American football." Rugby kept the first half of its name, while American football kept the second half of its name. It could just as easily have been called American rugby! The name "Gridiron" comes from a name used to describe or refer to the field of play, so-named because of the grid-like jail-bar pattern the lines make. Just as Americans use the word "soccer" to refer to Association football, the English sometimes use "Gridiron" to refer to American football. When the down-and-distance system was introduced to the game, teams painted crisscrossed lines on the field to indicate 5-yard increments. (At the time, you needed 5 yards to get a first down.) The field therefore resembled a gridiron -- a metal grate with parallel bars used for cooking.Because it evolved from rugby, which in turn evolved from soccer -- or what most of the world calls "football." Rugby is really "rugby football," just as soccer is really "association football." American/gridiron football is just another football code, and its name reflects its origins. Rugby kept the first half of its name, while American football kept the second half of its name. It could just as easily have been called American rugby!ANSWER. In North America they struggled at football and rugby league/union so they decided to invent lesser more basic sports so they could win at something by avoiding competition. Gridiron was born. ----------------------- American football is called 'gridiron' for the line markings that it uses. There are lines, widthwise across the field, every five yards along with lines marking the end of the end zone and the sidelines. If one was to look at an American football field from above, the pattern would resemble a gridiron. Canadian/American football is known globally as "gridiron" or sometimes "American style rugby". It was invented by north Americans who found football too technical for them and they needed to use their hands in order to control the ball. Gridiorn is used globally so no one confuses football with lesser sports.Because the painted lines on the field resemble a gridiron, a metal rack for cooking over a fire.American style football is called the gridiron sport because of the markings on the football field.

Cheap football shirts for a football team have to be consistent in color and style. To get enough in the one style and color and at a low price you would need to get them from a discounter such as WalMart or Seers or a discount fashion outlet stocking sports apparel.
