The FIFA World cup is the single biggest event in international football, closely followed by the European championships and the COPA America (the equivalent of the European championships) in the South and Central America. The African Nations Cup is the equivalent competion in Africa. The Champions league in Europe is the biggest competition for European football clubs, whilst nationally the European leagues in England, Spain and Italy are the biggest and widely regarded as the best leagues around the world. The FA cup in England is arguably the most sort after trophy in domestic world football (it is the single longest running football competition).
