The World Series is about a world championship against the National League champion and the American League champion. The World Series started in 1903 against the Boston Americans versus the Pittsburgh Pirates. Boston won 5 games to 3.
As of today, there was 108 World Series played ever since then.
Because in 1903, the United States of America was the world.
At least, that's what I tell people. Essentially, it is true. Back in 1903, when the World Series was first played, America was the international center of attention. Furthermore, the 19th-century championships that predate the modern World Series was also nicknamed the World Series, short for the "World's Championship Series", for the same reason. Plus, calling it the World Series makes it sound more important. For those who object to the name and want it to be renamed the "American Series" (groan), how would that make the Toronto Blue Jays feel?
The current trophy is called FIFA World Cup Trophy.
Jules Rimet Trophy
The Red Sox won the World Series Trophy in 2004. The game was played between October 23 and 27, 2004 against the St. Louis Cardinals.
