A volleyball hitter is usually positioned in the front row of the rotation. Also, possibly known as the blocker when playing defense the hitter's job is to jump in front of the opposing team's spike or tip to try and stop it from coming over onto their side of the court. When playing offense the hitter's job is to spike the ball to the other side of the court after it has been set up by the setter.
An outside hitter hits on the far left side of the net. Usually this is your "outlet" hitter meaning if there is a bad pass and the setter can't really make a good set, they set the ball to the outside. The outside hitter will sometimes play back row as well.

Inaccurate first passes usually result in a set to the outside hitter rather than middle or opposite. Since most sets to the outside are high, the outside hitter may take a longer approach, always starting from outside the court sideline. In non-beginners play, there are again two outside hitters on every team in every match.
