Depends on the severity of the rule broken or action of the player. Yellow cards are given for slightly dirty tackles or something not too violent. Red cards are given for very dirty tackles or telling off the ref, fighting, or upon receiving two yellow cards. Not the best answer but gives you an idea. (yellow is less severe then red.
