Baseball Players don't need a ton of equipment unless they are very serious players. I have made a list below of what is needed. Don't be conned into buying very expensive equipment if the ball player isn't going to be a very serious player or is going to grow out of the equipment soon.
-Glove
-Bat
-Batting Gloves
-Cleats
-Baseball Pants
-Socks
There are many other things they might need if they are a serious player but for the recreational player they are optional.

Main- Gloves, bats, helmets, batting gloves, and baseballs. For A Catcher- Catchers glove, Catchers mask, chest protector, shin pads (also cover the knee) and when you get older sometimes you use a special catching glove that has extra padding so when the pitchers start to throw harder it doesn't sting as bad.
The Simplest form of Baseball can be played with a baseball( or softball if you do not have a baseball), a Baseball bat, and some form of bases (or markers for bases). It is also smart to have Baseball gloves however it is possible to play without Baseball gloves.
The equipment used in baseball varies by position. A universal piece is a mitt. Baseball mitts are used to catch the ball and protect the player. However, there are different mitts for different positions. For example, here are pitcher mitts, first basemen mitts, catcher mitts, infield mitts, and outfielders mitts. Another piece of equipment used is the "Cup", which is used to protect the genitals. It is considered part of the uniform by many because it is mandatory to wear. Baseball bats are another piece of equipment used by all hitting players. This is used to swing and (hopefully) make contact with the ball to git a hit. There is also gear used by catchers. Catchers use chest guards, masks, and leg protectors. another very important piece of baseball equipment is the baseball itself. Finally, a set of 4 bases are needed. Those bases are 1st base, 2nd base, 3rd base, and home plate.
Generally speaking, here is a list of baseball equipment that is used at all levels of baseball:
1. Baseball bats for hitting the ball;
2. Baseballs, the basic part of the game;
3. Baseball uniforms ( unorganized youth games do not require uniforms );
4. Athletic shoes, normally with either metal of some type of rubberized/plastic cleats to run and field better;
5. Baseball gloves to catch the ball. These are needed as the ball often flies fast & it's a hard ball;
6. Special catcher position protective gear to help the catcher from being injured by pitched ball, foul balls, and protection from the bats of opposing team players at bat; and
7. Baseball "bags" as they are part of the game of play, and this includes a "homeplate" bag.
You need the basic stuff for baseball. I suggest the you get a bat, a baseball, and a glove.
There are not many pieces of equipment that are needed to play baseball such as a glove. You will also need a bat to play baseball.
