== == == == Power forwards are generally centers that are too short to play the center position. They usually are good rebounders, have a decent mid-range shot, and have good low post moves. Some examples of power forwards are Elton Brand, Tim Duncan, and Jason Thompson.
Teams usually play with two forwards. The power forward - also known as the number 4 - is usually the bigger of the two. He/she is responsible for scoring close to the basket and gathering rebounds on both offense and defense. Many power forwards can also play center.
Basketball players positions are listed 1 through 5. 1 is the point guard, 2 is called the number 2 guard, off guard or shooting guard, 3 is the small forward, 4 is the power forward or strong forward, and five is the center. This question can not be easily answered because there are many variables in any particular defense. Defenses include zone, 2-3, 3-2, man, etc, with different movements depending on the what offense is being run. The role of the power forward may not be defined in any given formation. Sometimes a defense may have two centers, one acting as powerr forward, or two shooting guards and one small forward acting as power forward, etc. So just to let you know that there is no "definition" of power forward. But in genral if a definition were to be given it would be as follows: The power forward is more closely related to the center than any other position. He/she is responsible on defense for the "key" area around the basket. He/she along with the center "enforce" this area, by not allowing others to "drive" into this area to score, and to "box out" and get the rebounds. They will help their center defend the opponents center. They mainly keep the other team from getting to close to the basket for an easy score. They stand there to "box out" the opponent (keep them away, put their body between the opponent and basket), if the opponent does then they will attempt to block the shot, and rebound. The power forward is generally the least appreciated on the team, and they usually only stand out if they get alot of blocks or rebounds.
Power forwards play a role similar to that of center in what is called the "post" or "low blocks". They play offensively with their back to the basket on offense and position themselves defensively under the basket in a zone defense or against the opposing power forward on defense in man to man defense. Usually the big guy on the team and aggressive at getting rebounds and scoring from down low on the court. Power forwards must contend for every rebound and must understand how to box out for rebounds. They should have some low post moves, especially the hook shot.
Some famous PF are Dennis Rodman, Charles Barkely, Kevin McHale, and Karl Malone.
